The Anacortes Music Project (AMP) Choir, directed by Kathy Moore, is a popular community choir in Anacortes, Washington, that has grown to 60 voices. It features community-focused performances and showcases, often holding practices and events in the local area to foster musical participation and community connection.
“Let the Sunshine In” is more than a song, it’s an anthem, a vocal call for unity and collective rising during dark times, an embrace of the light that shines when we celebrate our shared connection.
“Ohio” is a vehicle for collective outrage and grief over the loss of four Kent State students who died protesting the Vietnam War. Music unites us in shared purpose, and that was exactly the experience I and so many others had at a concert in our community dedicated to love, peace, and protest.
The energy was electric, clapping, singing, joining together in the hopeful declaration of our personal power to grieve those lost to violence, and to rediscover joy. The room became one.
A gospel piece about riding the train to Heaven brought the house down. A soulful singer delivered a message of hope so powerful it stopped hearts and lifted them at the same time, proof that music transcends politics and speaks directly to the soul.
Choirs are forming across this country to raise their voices for change, and I am so proud of our community for opening their hearts to this message of hope and peace. It was a night of extraordinary love.
Now it’s your turn. Find your choir, your concert, your community. Raise your voice, in song, in solidarity, in whatever way moves you. The light only grows brighter when we shine it together.
