At The Percolate Peace Project, we celebrate the many ways peace takes shape in our lives—through creativity, kindness, and the stories we choose to share. In The Peace Guidebook, beloved children’s author and artist Sally Huss offers a heartfelt reflection on the power of joy, imagination, and uplifting others. Her contribution reminds us that peace is often found in simple acts of love and expression, and that when we share our gifts, we create ripples of harmony that touch generations.
What does “peace” mean to you personally?
It means “harmony” to me. It is about having all of the energies in any situation aligned and working together for the benefit of all involved, whether it is a country or an individual person (their body or their works). It is not a passive position or stance.
What is one way you actively practice peace in your daily life?
I believe peace is an underlying state in the universe and it is our job as individuals to help smooth out the frictions and disturbances we find in our personal world or as far as our reach goes.
Your story in The Peace Guidebook touches on faith. Why was it important for you to share that experience?
I shared my story of a wonderful 50-marriage that was my support in my work and activities. There was not a day that went by that my husband didn’t tell me what I was doing was useful and that he loved me. If anyone asked about us and our marriage, he was eager to report that, “There has never been a harsh word between us… and never a fight.” We were at peace with each other at all times, even though we had the usual life struggles of functioning in this world.
What advice would you give someone who feels peace is impossible right now?
If a person feels that peace is impossible right now, their view is very limited. “Right now,” yes, perhaps this is true. But life is long-term gig. I believe, we are all here, for as long as we are here, to “make the world a better place,” which means to work toward a peaceful and harmonious state -- for all. We do the best we can by using our talents for “good” and then others come in to do their part. Humans are still very young and far from ideal. At this time our animalistic nature is obviously prevalent. There are many levels to humanity from the most base and brutal beings to the rare supreme beings who may walk among us. Patience is required.
What’s one small action anyone can take today to leave their Peace Print in the world?
The most important thing a person can do to promote Peace in the World is to remain peaceful themselves. To maintain inner harmony is the highest calling and we are all called. A person’s inner state is not theirs alone. It affects everyone and everything near and far. No matter what difficulty comes along your path, do everything you can to settle yourself. Face the challenge with balance and strength, knowing that a peaceful force is supporting you. Your cells will appreciate it, as will the rest of the world, even if no one tells you. It is a skill worth mastering. Life is wonderful! Don’t forget it. You pass peace by being peaceful yourself.
